What Do I Need?
The number of portable toilets needed for a job site depends on the number of employees and is governed by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards:
20 or fewer employees: One toilet and one urinal
21–200 employees: One toilet and one urinal for every 40 employees
201 or more employees: One toilet and one urinal for every 50 employees
OSHA also requires that job sites have the same number of restrooms for each gender. For proper sanitation, it’s recommended by OSHA to have one handwashing station for every two portable toilets.
When placing portable toilets, it’s important to consider accessibility and traffic flow. For large construction sites, it’s recommended to place a toilet near each workstation or on each side of the site to allow better access for service. Signs and maps can also help workers find the toilets.
It’s crucial to always overestimate the number of portable toilets needed, as underestimating can result in long lines and uncomfortable experiences.
